Lesson 2: Decimals on the number lineThousandths on the number line
We can find the value of a point on a number line that falls between two known values, in this case 0.03 and 0.04. It is important to understand place value, specifically the tenths, hundredths, and thousandths places. By dividing the space between the two known values into ten equal segments, it shows that the point is located at 0.038 (or 38 thousandths).

- I don't get where he gets the thousandths from? can someone help me understand?(19 votes)
- On this number line, each hundredth (segment of length 0.01) is divided into 10 equal parts.
So each part is 1/10 of 1/100 = 1/10 * 1/100 = (1 * 1)/(10 * 100) = 1/1000.
Have a blessed, wonderful day!(28 votes)
- Didn't really understand2:01... Can someone explain it to me?(30 votes)
- So you would write this out as:
0.03
+0.008
_____
8 thousandths plus nothing equals 8 thousandths, 0 plus 3 hundredths is 3 hundredths, and the rest is figured out easily, so you'd have 0.038.
HOPE YOU FOUND THIS HELPFUL!(51 votes)
- I don't understand the part at1:12.(18 votes)
- Hi Elise!
The 0.02, 0.03, and 0.04 are all hundredths. on the number line, each smaller mark represents one thousandth, or 0.001 since there are 10 marks in between each hundredth. He is showing that there. Hope that helped!(2 votes)
- So this is how I explain it: Example what is the 3 value in 0.300. The answer is .300 or if you want a easier problem like 3 in 3,000.49 where is the 3? The value is 3,000(11 votes)
- is it me or does this video sound like it is speed 1.25(6 votes)
- you could make the speed slower by going to settings and click playback speed.(4 votes)
- Could somewhat reiterate what this all means?(5 votes)
- I can give you some information, 0.3 is equal to 0.30 so he added 0.008 to it. that's how he got 0.038. The 0.001 explains one spot from 0.3 to 0.4 if you know how to compare fractions on a number line it'll be a bit easier. I hope this helps!(5 votes)
- I dont understand1:24.. can someone explain it to me?(3 votes)
- hey guys this is a direct mesage to khan acadmy that why progress never updats so the company of khan acadmy pls respond(3 votes)
- I do not understand this part:0:56?
Why is a number lesser than a hundredth a thousandth?(3 votes) - (this is what i understood, Basically I simplified it..? correct me if wrong)
"whats the value of the point graphed on the numberline??"
Its between 0.03, and 0.04.
0.03 is .300ths and 0.04 is .400ths
the space between them are in 10 equal spaces.
The whole thing is a hundredth so its equal to 0.01, so each tenth is gonna be a thousadth. (0.001)
(The ONE is in the thousandths place) so how many thousandths do we need to get to the value?
You start at 0.03 and add 0.008 to get this value.
so if you add them together you would get 0.038. So the point over there is 0.038.(3 votes)

- [Instructor] We're asked
what is the value of the point graphed on the number line
and this is the point right over here, so pause this video
and see if you can figure that out before we figure it out together. All right so let's try to
figure it out together now. So let's see this point is
between this is going to be this is the tenths place
this is the hundredths place so this over here is three
hundredths and this over here is four hundredths. So our point is between three
hundredths and four hundredths and the space between three
hundredths and four hundredths is divided into ten equal spaces. So if this whole thing is
a hundredth, so this whole thing is equal to 0.01 the
difference between that, that's a hundredth so then
each tenth of that is going to be a thousandth. So let me, I don't want to
make this too messy so this right over here will be
one tenth of a hundredth which is going to be a thousandth,
so it's going to be 0.001 we have a one in the thousandths place. So one way to think about it,
this number is going to be 0.03 so we have our three
hundredths but then let's see how many thousandths we have
to add to it to get to this value right over here. We have to add one
thousandth, two thousandths, three thousandths, four
thousandths, five thousandths, six thousandths, seven
thousandths, and eight thousandths. So we're starting at three
hundredths and then we are adding eight thousandths so you add
0.008 to get to this value. So if you were to add these
two together you're going to have three hundredths
and then the next place over is the thousandths place
and we have eight of them. So this point right over
here is 0.038 or you could do this as 38 thousandths
because three hundredths is 30 thousandths, so any way you
want to view it, this is the value of the point graphed
on the number line 0.038.
